Exterior finish

Types of exterior finishing materials

Name of exterior finish Standard thickness Treatment materials Features and general use
Nickel plating 3μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
They are inexpensive, but easily get rusted than the chromium plating. Light silver colored.
Application: Machine screws, hexagon nuts, etc.
Stain-like nickel plating 3~5μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
They are plated with nickel plating after providing satin-like finish to them. Light silver colored.
Application: Machine components, etc.
Chrome No.1 8μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
They are plated with a thick chrome plating and a polished finish is applied to them after being buffed. Silver-colored mirror finished surface.
Application: Ornaments, etc.
Chrome No.3 7μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
This is a bright plating and excellent in appearance. Spectral hues can be seen on the surface. Silver colored.
Application: Ornaments, etc.
Satin-like chromium plating finish 10μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
They are plated with chromium plating after providing satin-like finish to them. Whitish silver colored.
Application: General components.
Chromate treatment
[noncompliant with RoHS]
5μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
Noncompliant with RoHS. It contains more than 1,000 ppm of hexavalent chrome. Gold-colored.
Application: Sheet metal, nuts, bolts, etc. for electric appliances.
Trivalent chromate 5μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
Compliant with RoHS. Because its main component is white trivalent chromium salt, it is free from poison and wastewater treatment can be done with ease. Gold-colored.
Application: Sheet metal, nuts, bolts, etc. for electric appliances.
Black chromate
[noncompliant with RoHS]
5~8μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
Noncompliant with RoHS. It contains more than 1,000 ppm of hexavalent chrome.
Application: Sheet metal, nuts, bolts, etc. for electric appliances.
Trivalent black chromate 5~8μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
Compliant with RoHS. Because it primarily consists of black plating material and trivalent chromium salt, it is free from poison and wastewater treatment can be done with ease. It generally called the "trivalent black".
Application: Sheet metal, nuts, bolts, etc. for electric appliances.
Black nickel plating 3μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
Because its quality is somewhat irregular, it is used for internal components. Glossy black.
Application: General components.
Black chromium plating 1μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
It is used for components to be polished. Because its plating thickness is thin, it is used for high-precision components. Plating nonuniformity is prone to occur. Light black colored.
Hard black chromium plating 5~9μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
While it is highly adherent and excellent in wear resistance, it is expensive. Matte black finish. It is costly for larger sized components.
Application: High-precision components to be polished, stages, etc.
Magnetite coating
(black oxide finish)
3μm Iron and steel Magnetite coating is generated on the surface.
It is used for those components that are to be polished after providing exterior finish, such as a shank. It is easily rusted.
Application: Shank, etc.
Gold plating 0.1~10μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
Gold-colored plating.
Application: Special components or the like that are used in a vacuum.
Silver plating 1~20μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
Silver-colored plating. It provides a good electrical continuity.
Application: Special electrical components, etc.
Copper plating 5~μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
Copper-colored plating.
Application: Foundation layer, etc. for nickel plating and chromium plating
Electroless nickel plating
[Some are not compliant with RoHS.]
5~8μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
Aluminum alloy
It provides a thin and uniform thickness of silver-colored plating which is used for general components to be polished. Because it is electroless plating, it can reach the inner surface of a deep hole.
Noncompliant with RoHS. Because of some nickel plating solutions that contain "1,000 ppm or more" of lead, which may remain on components, a proper plating solution needs to be specified.
Rustproof black coating
(RAYDENT Processing)
2~10μm Iron and steel, brass and
stainless steel
Black coating of chrome oxide. Your desired coating can be specified. There are instances in which this coating may be regarded as paint application.
Application: Stage, etc.
White alumite finish 8μm Aluminum alloy Its hue looks like a whitish aluminum of which spectral hues can be seen on the surface.
Application: Machine components.
Satin-like white alumite finish 8μm Aluminum alloy Satin-like finish is provided through chemical polishing after white alumite treatment is given. It conveys a sense of high quality. It is costly for larger sized components.
Application: Stage, etc.
Matte white alumite finish 8μm Aluminum alloy It is a while finish coating with white alumite delustered.
Application: Machine components.
Black alumite finish 10μm Aluminum alloy It is glossy black in appearance of which spectral hues can be seen on the surface.
Application: General components.
Satin-like black alumite finish 10μm Aluminum alloy Chemical polishing is provided after black alumite treatment is given. It conveys a sense of high quality. It is costly for larger sized components. Black semi-gloss finish.
Application: Stage, etc.
Matte black alumite finish 10μm Aluminum alloy It is a black finish coating with black alumite delustered.
Application: Optical components.
